6 Essential Furniture Pieces for a New Home
Moving from a dorm or small apartment into a new home? Getting out on your own for the first time? Newly married and getting settled into your new house? Chances are as you are moving into your new house you will find that you just don’t have all the furniture you need to live comfortably and fill the space.
Trying to figure out just what you need in terms of furniture can be a bit overwhelming. Here’s a list of essential furniture for a new home that can have you settled in and make your new place feel like home in no time.
1. A Bed
If you are going to splurge on one piece of furniture for your new home it should be your bed. You spend anywhere from 1/3-1/2 of your life in bed, so you may as well make sure that it’s comfortable! Mattresses can last for 10 years or longer and can make the difference between you waking up feeling refreshed and alert or waking up tired, crabby and sore. Shop around and spend the extra money to get a high quality mattress and bed that provides the support that you need to get a good night’s sleep.
2. A Table
A kitchen table is great for eating around, but also can serve so many other purposes. You can use it for paying bills or doing paperwork, making crafts, entertaining guests and a lot more. Before buying a table make sure that it will fit into your space and look for one that can seat as many people as possible.
3. Chairs
Your table won’t be much good without chairs. Look for chairs that are a comfortable height for sitting at the table and that provide good back support. If you are on a budget check out used furniture stores or thrift stores for chairs. They can always be painted or refinished to match your decor.
4. A Sofa or Couch
You need a comfortable place to kick back and relax and nothing fits the bill quite like a sofa or couch. Whether you lay on it and read a book, watch TV or just chill out it can be a great place to unwind after work. For a sofa that can do double duty as a guest bed consider getting a futon that folds out into a bed. They are typically cheaper than sofas and have the extra advantage of providing a place for guests to stay when they visit.
5. A Dresser or Chest of Drawers
Unless you plan to leave your clothes sitting out in plain site, a dresser is an essential piece of furniture. Look for one that fits easily into your space but still provides enough room for all your clothes. If you have a small space you can opt for a taller dresser to provide more storage without eating up all your floor space.
6. Lighting
Lamps can make your life a lot easier by providing the light that you need to get things done. When shopping for lighting consider how you will use the space and buy light that allows you to make the most of it. For instance, if you spend a lot of time reading on your couch you will want to find a lamp that provides good reading light.
While there certainly are many more pieces of furniture you could buy, if you cover these essentials you should be able to live comfortable and have your house feel like a home.
