Ideas for Craft Projects Using Old Windows
Using old windows to create craft projects isn’t just fun, but it also can help to keep the windows from winding up in a landfill somewhere while giving you a beautiful item to display in your home.
You can use any type of old window to create crafts and with a little imagination and elbow great turn it into something wonderful. Here are some ideas on how to use old windows in your crafting.
The best kinds of old windows to use are the ones with multiple panes of glass instead of just a single pane. You can usually find these windows at flea markets, thrift stores or antique malls. Try posting an add on a classified site like Craigslist saying that you are looking for old windows and you will probably get several people to respond who will give you their old windows for free.
Once you have your window you are ready to get crafting!
One easy way to use old window frames is to use them as a unique way to display pictures. Try taping photos to the back of the panes of glass and then hanging the window frame on the wall. Don’t feel like you have to limit yourself just to snapshots.
You can print out photos from your computer to any size you need. Try turning photos of your kids into black and white images and printing them to fit the panes. Or tape fabric or patterned paper onto the backs of the panes of glass to create a unique piece of art for your walls. With a little bit of creativity you can create the perfect piece for your decor.
Another great way to dress up a window frame is to turn it into a mirror. Remove the glass from the frame and replace it with mirror cut to size instead. You can pick up mirror tiles at your local home improvement store for just a few dollars and cut them to fit the panes perfectly.
This is a great option for a room where you don’t have a window since the mirror will help give the illusion or the room being larger than it is and it will almost feel like there is a window in the room.
You can paint the wood of the window frame to match your decor. For a country look, trying using paint with a crackling medium which will crackle the paint and give it an antique look.
Check out the spray paint aisle at your local store as well for a variety of different spray paints in unique and beautiful faux finishes that can really spruce up an old window frame.
If you are artistic, you can use glass paints to paint the window panes to look like stained glass and then hang the frame in a picture window in your home. You can buy glass paints and faux leading at most craft and hobby stores and this can make a really beautiful display.
To hang the frame, put eye screws into the top of the frame and hang it using thin chain from the inside of the window frame so it is suspended in front of your window.
For a great country look, first antique the wood of the window frame and remove the glass. Cover the back of the window frame with chicken wire and then wire on small country themed decorations where appropriate or just leave it as is and set it out on display.
Use your imagination and you can come up with hundreds of different ways to creatively use an old window!
