How Can I Tame My Frizzy Hair?
Is your frizzy hair driving you nuts? Hair that either starts frizzy or gets frizzy with humidity can be a real pain in the you-know-what. The good news is that there are some easy things you can do to help get it under control. If you’ve been wondering “how do I tame my frizzy hair???” read on for some simple suggestions.
What Causes Frizzy Hair?
Before we tackle the frizz it’s important to know what causes it in the first place. The truth is, there are a lot of reasons that hair goes frizzy. Some of the most common?
- Lack of moisture
- Damage from too much perming/coloring
- Damage from heat
- Brushing curly hair after it is dry.
- Washing your hair too often
Most naturally curly hair is naturally dry, which makes it a lot more likely to go frizzy instead of curly.
If you damage your hair by frequently perming or coloring it or use a lot of heat on it you probably will find that you have a heck of a time getting it to lay smooth.
Brushing curly hair after it is dry is a big no-no since it separates the curls and causes them to become frizz instead.
Finally, if you wash your hair too often with shampoo it washes away the natural oils from your scalp and can leave your hair dry and frizzy.
How to Tame the Frizz
Now that we know some of the things that cause frizzy hair we can get down to business and start getting it under control.
First, let’s take care of the issue of dryness. If you have naturally curly hair you are probably going to have to add a pomade or anti-frizz serum to your hair care routine. These products combat the hair’s natural dryness and help it to lay smooth and flat. Apply a small amount of either pomade or anti-frizz serum to your palm, rub it into your hands and then run your hands through your hair from about your ears down.
Avoid getting it too close to your scalp or your will just wind up looking greasy! Then, either allow it to dry naturally or dry it with a diffuser on your hair dryer.
If you want tight, spiral curls, wrap a small section of hair around your finger while it is wet, then slide your finger out without distrurbing the curl. Continue this around your head until you have done all your hair and then allow it to dry on its own.
Never brush curly hair after it is dry or you will seperate the curls and make it frizz out big time!
Next, if you have damaged your hair with heat, perming or coloring, the key to fighting frizz it to try to repair or at least minimize the damage. Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to add moisture back into your hair and help get it into better shape.
Avoid heat and chemicals as long as possible to help your hair start to recover. In the meantime, you can also use an anti-frizz serum or pomade in the same way I mentioned above. Keep in mind that with these products a little goes a long ways!
Finally, cut back on how often you shampoo your hair. You can still shower every day, but try to skip shampooing as much as possible. Some people even stop shampooing all together and see great results with the condition of their hair!
Experiment and see what works best for you. You should still use conditioner, but only apply it from your ears down, again to avoid getting too greasy on top.
These simple tips should help you tame the frizz and get back to beautiful hair.
