How to Make a Delicious Banana Split

Banana splits are a timeless classic when it comes to desserts. These tasty treats are easy to make, taste terrific, and have the added benefit of give you some actual fruit along with your dessert.

While you certainly can’t say that banana splits are health food, you can at least make yourself feel better about eating one by telling yourself you are getting a serving of fruit along with it.

To start making your banana split, you will need a banana, ice cream in the flavor of your choosing, toppings and whipped cream. Your toppings can be whatever you like, but common toppings include butterscotch, chocolate sauce, strawberries, hot fudge, pineapple or nuts.

You may also want to pick up a jar of maraschino cherries to put a cherry on top of your banana split as a finishing touch once you have finished building it. Ideally to make a traditional banana split you should use chocolate, strawberry and vanilla ice cream, but you can use whatever kinds you like best.

You’ll need to find a suitable container to put your banana split in. You can buy long, narrow dishes specifically made for banana splits which are called banana boats, but most people just use a bowl since it is something that they have on hand. If you use a banana boat or oval dish you can leave your banana at full length. If you go for a bowl you may need to cut your banana in half to allow it to fit in the bowl.

Begin by cutting the ends of the banana off without removing the peel. Then, slice the banana in half lengthwise to create two long pieces of banana. It is easier to cut the banana while it is unpeeled since it will hold its shape better and won’t squish. Once you have halved the banana, place each half into your dish on either side of the dish leaving a “row” down the middle for your ice cream.

If you are building in a bowl, cut the banana in half first, and then cut each half in half lengthwise to create 4 banana pieces so they will fit in your bowl. Arrange the 4 pieces leaning against the edges of the bowl so they form an “x” across the bowl with room in the middle for your ice cream.

Next, scoop three scoops of ice cream and line them up between the pieces of banana in your dish. Add your toppings, spray whipped cream on each scoop of ice cream, sprinkle with nuts and add a cherry to the top to finish it off. You’ve now got a delicious treat that is a whole lot of fun to eat. Enjoy!
