Instructions for How to Make a Sock Puppet
Sock puppets have been a popular way of entertaining children for decades and are a fun, inexpensive craft project that makes a great rainy day activity for kids. Making sock puppets is easy and once they are completed they can provide hours or entertainment for your children where they can use their imaginations and creativity.
All you need to get started making your own sock puppets are some old socks and some decorations.
You can either buy new socks from the store or use old mis-matched socks you have laying around the house to make your sock puppets. If you are like me and your dryer mysteriously eats your socks you probably have a lot of spares lying around that would work perfectly.
The most versatile color for making sock puppets is white, however you can use any color sock that you choose and can even use the color of the sock to influence what kind of character you make your sock puppet into.
Some items that are handy for decorating sock puppets include googly eyes, fake hair, markers, fabric paint, glitter, small pom-poms, cotton balls, felt, pipe cleaners and just about any other kind of decoration you can think of.
The more choices you have when it comes to materials to decorate your sock puppet the more creative you can be with your characters. You will also want to have some white school glue on hand for gluing decorations onto your sock.
The first thing you need to do to create your sock puppet is to give him a mouth so he can talk. To do this, put the sock over your hand, mark the space between your thumb and fingers, and then create a slit there in the sock for the mouth to go in using a pair of scissors.
Next, take some poster board and cut an oval shaped piece of it that will fit into the space you left for the mouth. You can either cover this with fabric or use red poster board to make the oval. Either way it will be the inside of your character’s mouth, so make it an appropriate color. Fold it in half and either glue or stitch it into the hole that you made in your sock puppet to give it a mouth.
Now that your puppet can talk, all that is left to do is decorate it! Use your imagination and attach eyes, hair, ears, hats, fur, or any other thing you want to give your sock puppet some character.
You can make animal sock puppets by cutting felt to form animal-shaped ears and gluing them to the top of the sock in the appropriate place, or you can make sock people. Make a glamorous sock puppet and give it a feather boa - or make a nerdy sock puppet and attach pipe cleaner glasses. The most important part is to have fun.
Once you are done decorating the sock puppets give the glue a chance to dry and then have your own puppet show with the characters that you made. These really are fun to make and are a great way to use your creativity both while making them and while playing with them
