Instructions for Dying Flowers

Flowers are naturally beautiful, but you can’t always find them in the color that you need. For instance, colors like black, green or bright blue just don’t occur in nature.

So what do you do when you need flowers in one of these unusual colors? Dye them! Here are some instructions for dying flowers to get you started.

Dying flowers is actually incredibly easy. All you need are some white or light colored flowers (carnations work great), a vase, some water and a bit of food ocloring.

Start by filling your vase partway with water and then putting the stem of the flower in the water. The top of the flower doesn’t need to come close to the water at all. Instead, the dye is going to be sucked up into the flower through the stem, so just make sure that the end of the stem is under water.

Next, choose whatever color of food color you would like to dye your flower with. Add food coloring to the water in the vase. A good ratio of food coloring to water is somewhere in the neighborhood of 5-7 drops of coloring for each cup of water in the vase. Use your best judgement, though, and add food coloring until the color of the water is fairly dark.

Now, set your flower out in the sun and keep an eye on it for a day or two. You should see it start to change color as it pulls the food coloring up through its stem and out through its petals. Leave it in the water until the flower has reached the perfect shade. That’s it!

Try playing around with different types of white or light colored flowers for different effects. Some flowers will turn a solid color while others will develop streaks of color on their petals.
