Make Your Own Simple Christmas Stocking
Christmas stockings are one of the most beloved Christmas traditions, and making your own stockings can be a fun way to add a personal touch to the holiday season. Even if you aren’t very good with crafting, Christmas stockings are easy to make and can be a lot of fun to decorate and personalize.
It is a great family project that allows everyone to use their imagination and creativity to create their own Christmas stocking and can make for cherished memories for years to come. Here are some different ideas for how you can make your own Christmas stockings.
To make a simple stocking with no sewing, purchase red and green felt from your local fabric store. You can either freehand the shape of the stocking or you can trace around an old stocking to create a pattern for cutting out the stocking from the felt.
Draw the shape of the stocking onto an old piece of newspaper to create a simple pattern that you can use to make all of your stockings so that they are uniform in size and shape. Cut out the stocking pattern from the newspaper.
Fold your felt in half and pin the pattern to it near the edge, then cut out the felt following the pattern. Because the felt is folded in half you will be cutting both halves of your stocking at the same time.
Next, take a large needle and thread some yarn or embroidery thread in either a contrasting color or the same color and whip stitch the edges of the two pieces you just cut together making sure not to sew across the top of the stocking.
If you prefer you can just glue the two pieces together, although stitching them instead will provide more strength so that the stockings can hold more goodies.
Once you have stitched the pieces together, cut another piece of felt in a contrasting color that is the same width as the top of the stocking. Make the top edge of the felt straight and cut the bottom edge with a wavy pattern (or whatever pattern you want). Glue this piece of felt to the stocking to create a fake “cuff” for the stocking.
Now comes the fun part! You can decorate your stockings however you want. Try writing each family member’s name across the cuff section of the stocking using fabric glue or just white glue and glitter.
You can cut out decorations from felt and glue on, or attach faux fur to jazz up the stockings as you see fit. You can either make all of your stockings the same or you can allow each person to decorate their own stocking however they want.
Either way, you will be making fun, unique stockings that can last for years to coming and having a great time as a family making them together.
When you are done decorating your stockings attach a piece of yarn or a ribbon at the back edge of the top of the stocking and hang them up to display.
