Tips for Making an Elegant Orchid Centerpiece for a Wedding

Orchids are some of the most beautiful flowers around and are becoming more and more popular for weddings. They are elegant, delicate flowers that really can make an impact and bring a sense of class and sophistication to your wedding. Here is an idea on how to create elegant wedding centerpieces using orchids.

For the base of your orchid wedding centerpiece, you are going to use a bamboo placemat. You can find bamboo placements both in rectangle shapes and in oval shapes and they make a lovely backdrop for this centerpiece. Most bamboo placemats come in either light or dark stains, so choose one that will compliment the colors of your wedding and of the orchids you have chosen. The wood tones of the bamboo will add a rich element to the centerpiece and help to keep it grounded.

Next, you will need to look for glass or crystal bowls that are wide at the top. Low, flat bowls work really well for this rather than deep, narrow bowls. Also pick up some small decorative gravel or stones in earthy, natural colors.

To put your orchid wedding centerpieces together, start by placing the bamboo placemat in the center of the table. Fill the bottom of your glass or crystal bowl with the small stones or gravel, and then add water to 1-2 inches below the top of the bowl. Next, cut the stems off your orchids so you are just left with the blossom. Lay several large orchids in each bowl so they float on the surface of the water.

For extra embellishment you can scatter additional orchids on the bamboo mat around the bowl. If you would like you can also add complimentary flowers or greenery to create more of a visual impact. However, part of what makes this such an elegant wedding centerpiece is its simplicity, so don’t go overboard adding too many extra flowers or leaves.

Large orchids that have more of a waxy feel to them are best for this centerpiece since they will float better and will last longer than more delicate orchids. If your local florist doesn’t carry the orchids that you want they usually can either order them for you or you can order them yourself online.

You can have all of the centerpieces pretty well ready to go in advance and then just add the flower blossoms the day of your wedding to ensure that they do not wilt or die. Also, try adding tepid or lukewarm water to the bowls rather than cold water before you begin floating the orchids. This will help the orchids to last longer and keep your centerpieces looking fresh and beautiful.
