Should You Rinse Your Hair in Cold Water?

For years people have debated about whether or not rinsing your hair in cold water has any effect. So what’s the verdict? Should you rinse your hair in cold water, warm water or hot water? Does it make a difference?

The fact is that yes, rinsing your hair in cold water does make a difference and will help you hair to look better. The cold water helps to smooth down the cuticle of the hair. The result? Smoother, easier to manage hair.

If you do start rinsing with cold water you will probably also notice that your hair has a lot more shine. Since the cuticle is laying flat it provides a more reflective surface for the light to bounce off of which can make your hair a lot shinier.

If you are intimidated by the idea of dousing yourself with a blast of cold water in the shower don’t worry - you aren’t alone! Nobody likes the idea of an icy cold shower. You might try finishing your shower without rinsing your hair then getting out and rinsing it under the faucet with cold water. That way at least your entire body won’t get hit with a blast of cold water.

Or, consider rinsing with warm water rather than hot or cold. Although it won’t give you quite as much effect as really cold water, it still will help you get more shine and can be a lot less shocking to your body.

Most experts agree that cold air can also provide the same effect or enhance the effects of a cold water rinse. If you have a hair dryer with a cool button on it try giving your hair a blast of cool air before you style it as well to help increase the smoothness and shine.
