Tips for Painting a Bathroom

Even though they are usually one of the smallest rooms, bathrooms can be one of the most expensive places in your home to remodel or update. Often, however, a simple coat of fresh paint on the walls is enough to make your bathroom look fresh and new without breaking the bank.

All you need is a little paint, a little elbow grease, and before you know it, your bathroom will be looking beautiful. Here are some tips on how to paint your bathroom.

Most bathrooms are a bit on the small size, so when it comes to choosing a paint color for your bathroom it is usually a good idea to go with something light rather than a dark color.

Darker colors can make your bathroom feel a bit like a cave, while lighter colors can make it feel larger and more open and airy.

Choose a color that compliments your existing bathroom fixtures and any other decor in your room such as your countertops or vanity. It is cheaper to match the paint to your bathroom than to remodel your bathroom to match the paint.

You may also want to consider choose a second color in your bathroom for painting trim or built in accents to help liven the space up. Usually lighter colored walls with darker trim look pretty, or vice versa. The contrast between the trim and the walls will help the room to look crisp and clean.

Also, if you have any water or mildew stains you should use a primer designed to block them or they will just soak back through your new paint job and ruin it before you know it.

Along with choosing a color for the paint you should also choose a finish. When painting a bathroom you should use a semi-gloss or satin paint and avoid flat paint.

Bathrooms tend to get messy and have a lot of moisture. A semi-gloss will be much easier to clean and will stay looking nice a lot longer than flat paint. While you are buying your paint you should pick up a few paint brushes, painters tape and some rollers as well.

Once you have all your supplies you are ready to get started painting your bathroom. Begin by removing any furniture or wall hangings from the bathroom that you can. The less clutter there is in the room the easier it will be to paint. Also remove any covers from your electrical outlets or light switches.

That way you can just paint right up to the hole in the wall and then reinstall the cover over the top when the paint is dry to create a nice clean look without having to worry about getting paint on your outlet covers.

Patch any holes in the wall or damage so you have a nice smooth surface to paint.

Next, use the painter’s tape to tape off anywhere that you don’t want paint to get and to create nice sharp lines between the walls and the trim. If you are a careful painter you can just cut in the edges around the trim using a brush and no painter’s tape, however the tape will generally give you a nicer finished project and is well worth taking the extra time.

Once the edges of the room are painted you can use a roller to paint the large areas in the center of the walls. Allow the paint to dry and apply a second coat if necessary. Once all of the paint is dry you can reinstall your outlet covers and replace any furniture in the room.
